My Most Unique #TreasuredGift

Blogger Beckie Farrant of Infarrantly Creative has shared the story of her most unique #TreasuredGift.

Have you ever had a gift that someone gave you that was so precious and special to you that it transcends time? I mean, sure, those acid wash jeans I got for Christmas one year in 1987 were off the chain. However, styles and fads come and go and those acid washed jeans are long gone.

The day I was born a close family friend (who played a surrogate uncle role in my life) gave me a charm bracelet with a sterling silver baby cup with my birthday engraved into it, 8-10-77. I have had this bracelet for 38 years. What started as a bracelet for a baby with one charm on it grew and grew into this bracelet filled with memories and trinkets from my childhood.

Charms were added by my parents, my surrogate uncle mentioned above, junior high BFFs, and boyfriends. The bracelet is loud when worn, ridiculously heavy, and overly embellished with charms, and I love it.

You see each charm tells a story. The gumball machine charm a few to the right of my picture below? This was given to me by my surrogate uncle and symbolized my insatiable sweet tooth.

While that was a huge part of my childhood, I must admit, it is still very true of me today. I would ride my bike to White Hen Pantry in Elgin, Illinois (where I grew up) with my best friend and buy those plastic fruits filled with sugar powder and a can of white frosting. I would hide the white frosting under my bed and take spoonfuls of it each day until I ate the entire tub. Then I would have to somehow sneak the empty tub into the garage trash can so my parents wouldn’t find it. No, my parents didn’t approve, nor knew about my frosting binges.

Or how about the roller skate? That reminds me of countless middle school Friday nights at Roxy Wheels in Dundee, IL.

I couldn’t afford (and no way my parents would pay for) the $200+ speed skates that every cool kid had. I remember cutting my skates to make them look more like speed skates. I paid $4 for thicker skate laces and always made sure my pant leg covered the top of my skate boots so no one would discover the imposters. I also remember the day a kid fell right in front of me and I tripped right over him and landed on my shoulder and broke my collarbone. A lot of memories are compounded in that little roller skate charm.

It is amazing how my charm bracelet keeps me so connected to my childhood and reminds me of things I long have forgotten. It helps me remember moments long gone and what I dreamed about as a child, pre-teen and teenager.

In early high school those dreams mostly consisted of when my parents would allow me to have my own phone line. The minute I got a job at 15, I purchased my own phone line. The number was 695-2037. That number will always be burned into my memory. It was my first ring of independence, and hence, the reason for the phone charm.

Then there is the charm I purchased for myself while in college on a study tour of Israel (the one of the left of the softball glove). I remember as a young woman, walking through the Holy Land and watching the deep truths I learned growing up becoming really real to me in those moments. It was an amazing trip that I want to be burned into my memory forever.

I have charms to symbolize my wedding day, vacations I have been on, sports I played (even the swimming charm to symbolize that one dreadful season I swam and begged my parents to let me quit everyday – but they didn’t), activities I was into, and foods I loved. Each and every charm connects me to a memory. Thank you Uncle Jon, who has long passed, for giving me a gift 38 years ago that is still my most treasured gift.

Oh and if you happen to be my BFF who has the other half of the best friend charm would you please stand up? I have no idea where that came from 😉

I have a charm bracelet, and I’m always looking for charms with moving parts–like the wheels on the skates. Why would I want to read about this without your saying that you have such charms for sale?? Don’t send me any more such e-mails.

My 11 month old daughter and I were in a Tuesday Morning store 2 weeks ago… She noticed a small stuffed dog in the baby section. I gave it to her to hold while we shopped… Well, lo and behold, I ended up purchasing the $2.99 dog so she wouldn’t have a meltdown lol. She HAD to have this “DeeDee” (doggie).
Now she HAS to have her “DeeDee” anywhere we go.
Trouble is, I had no idea that out of all the blankets and stuffed animals that she has, she would take to this one.
The thing is, most of her others, I can get at the store, as backups.
Not DeeDee though. I’ve searched EBay, Amazon, etc. I can’t find another one.

      Help me Tuesday Morning!!!!!

I have a charm bracelet that i adore as well. Like you, each and every charm holds meaning, memories, and most importantly My Life so far. My point in saying this is that…. sure, I am always looking for certain charms but in no way does that mean I am unable and/or don’t want to read about someone else’s appreciation & love for their own charms/bracelet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your moving remembrance of some of your charms and can so totally relate on many levels – one being that my beloved Uncle with no health problems, extremely unexpectedly, just passed away 5 short weeks ago. I can only assume that some of your negative reviewers have no idea what a charm bracelet’s true purpose is and/or they lack ………well, I need not say anymore because I have a feeling you know exactly what I mean. Thank You for sharing a little of your past – via your charm bracelet (haha) – with everyone!

Have a very Merry Christmas Becki!

I had a charm bracelet, but it was so heavy with charms it was awkward to wear. Solution? I put all my charms on a long necklace with large links! Each charm is an individual link and reminds me of a treasured moment. Every time I wear it, I receive so many compliments. I love the skate charm pictured.

Hi, I had bought a bag, that had steel beading all over it, It looks like a nylon sack. The top of this bag had steal (sp”) and a steel rope, with a 4 digit twist together lock (male & female end, that needs a code added so they stay together), on the rope.

I loved it. It traveled with me everywhere I would go. In August, I stayed in a Texas hotel with my sister-in-law. She loved my “safe”, which I attached to the closet rod, while it was hid under my hanging black jacket.

Since my sister-in-law was leaving for Beirut, Lebanon from Austin, I figured that she really needed my prize possession. I thought I would go to Tuesday morning and buy myself another.

Well, my sister-in-law was happy. But, I never could find another “black steel beaded safe” to cary in my carryon in my travels.

If anyone has one, I would love to purchase it from you.

A very dear friend passed away right before fathers day– was hit by a car and gone in an instant. Her daughter called me to say that she had found a wrapped box with my name on it.She brought it over and inside was a birthday card and a small porcelain figurine from a series that I collected. That was almost 30 years ago and it still sits in my china cabinet. Every time I look at it it reminds me of the sweet times we had as friends.Honestly can say I will never forget her or our friendship.

I’m recently a retired nurse taking care of my mom, our homes, our little dog, and all the laundry and cleaning!!! But I am thinking of applying for a pt time job as I miss being around other people which I think it would be at Tuesday Morning when I apply anywhere!!

After a life altering accident, my mother became unable to care for herself. She resides in a nursing home and over the last 10+ years there have been many, many hospital trips and tearful days and nights. I found myself in the heart wrenching position that no daughter ever wants to be in. I knew that I had to go through and make decisions about her personal possessions. Among her things, I found my childhood charm bracelet along with charms that were waiting to be added but never were. I had all but forgotten about it. Now, it is one of my most cherished possessions. I have added charms that reminded me of childhood dreams and experiences. It reminds me of my mother and how much I love her!
