6 Ways to Take the Boring Out of Beige

Blogger Lindsay Hines of Whimsy Girl Design has given us 6 easy ways to take the boring out of beige and create a lovely, tranquil zone with neutral home décor items.

What comes to mind when you think of the color “beige”? It might be boring or bland… or perhaps it is cozy or calming. The great thing about a beige room is that it can be transformed very easily. As a neutral home décor fan myself, I love creating serene spaces that are full of interest and character without the use of a lot of color! Today I am going to share 6 tips for keeping your beige from being boring! Here we go:

Tip 1- Texture Takeover:

One of the easiest ways to add interest to a neutral room is through texture. There are several ways to add texture to a space… fluffy throw pillows, natural fiber rugs, linen curtains, cable-knit throw blankets… the list goes on! This chunky, jute rug from Tuesday Morning anchors our living room area while bringing in a rich texture to the space.

Tip 2- Pattern Play:

A great way to break up the monotony of neutral home décor is by the use of a pattern. In a neutral space, patterns that use the same color in a variety of shades add dimension to the space. As shown below, these patterned throw pillows add life to our solid color couch. The number “4” pillow from Tuesday Morning is a whimsical and unexpected touch.

Tip 3 – Layer It Up:

Layering different textures and colors is a great way to dress up a neutral space. This faux fur rug from Tuesday Morning gives our reading nook a cozy, welcoming feel while creating a nice dark contrast against the rug under it. The jute ottoman from Tuesday Morning brings in another layer of texture and adds a bit of charm with its unique shape and size.

Tip 4- Keep it Cozy:

One way to ensure a room isn’t bland and boring is to create a warm and welcoming ambiance in the space. This can easily be achieved with the use of a few accessories. Soft throw blankets, cozy pillows and glowing candles are a few simple ways to add warmth to your space. When I saw these gray knit pillows at Tuesday Morning, I knew they would be the perfect accessory to flank our fireplace.

Tip 5- Accessorize:

Accessories can make or break a room. Rustic wood items, branches, glass vases, mirrored accessories, dried naturals and plants are the perfect accessories for a neutral space. If you are like me and cannot keep real plants alive, Tuesday Morning has you covered with their faux plants and florals! This small, faux fern is a great accent to add to any space…

I love the pop of green it brings to the otherwise neutral home décor!

These moss covered spheres are another Tuesday Morning find! The great thing about these is that they can be mixed with different items for each season or left alone for a simple look. For fall, I mixed them with decorative pumpkins for a subtle, but festive, vignette.

Speaking of seasons, the best thing about a neutral space is that you can create a brand new look with just a few seasonal accessories. Tuesday Morning always has amazing seasonal décor! Tip 6- Seek the Unique

Keep your room interesting by incorporating unique pieces. Think outside the box and break the rules a bit… mix vintage items with new items; mix industrial touches with modern styles; find unique pieces and use them in an unconventional way. This lidded, wicker basket I found at Tuesday Morning a few years ago is one of my favorite things. When I saw it in the store, I immediately knew it would make a great end table for our living room!
