College Chic: Dorm Decorating Tips

We’ve partnered with Eye for Pretty’s Nicole Salceda, a designer who loves inspiring a pretty home and a beautiful life.

Few things are as exciting as going to college. Late nights, epic parties, good friends and a great education (of course!). Something I looked forward to most was decorating my dorm room. You have free rein to show your own personal style and decorate the way YOU want with the things you love. Even if it is only half the room! Here are some of my best tips for personalizing your space on a college-friendly budget.

Add your favorite colors and decorate with things you love. Turquoise and pink with black and white is a popular color mix these days. A cozy comforter, a large graphic print and textiles give the room personality.

Keep things pretty and organized by adding a tray to hold your favorite things. A sweet-smelling candle, jewelry and your keys are perfect here.

One thing that’s not so fun about college is how laundry piles up. House all your dirty laundry in an oversized tote and your friends will wonder how you keep your room so clean!

Late-night reading is a given in college. Keep all your books close on a fun side table that doesn’t take up much visual space!

Mix it up by using different patterns and textures throughout your space. Bold prints, fur, acrylic … now’s the time to experiment with your design style!

Every college kid needs a dedicated work space. Keep it decluttered and simple by using a large to-do clothespin to collect notes and a cute pencil case and an acrylic organizer to hold your office supplies. Grab a wireless speaker to cancel out all the background noise when you need to focus … then when you’re done studying, bring it in the hall for an impromptu dance party with your dorm-mates!

A well-stocked rolling cart provides a spot for late-night snacks and drinks. Use it for extra storage, too: It’s a great place to put your shower caddy or yoga mat.

Removable and non-permanent decor is the way to go. These oversized wall stickers are perfect for jotting down notes and keeping your busy life organized.

My best advice is to HAVE FUN! The college years go by so fast, and it’s the best time to explore and find out who you are and want to be. Show your personal style in and out of your room and just be YOU!
